It used to be that if you needed help – with your rent, your gas bill, your grocery bill, or your abusive spouse – figuring out whom to call for that help was nearly as complicated as the problem itself.FORT WAYNE – It’s going to get a lot easier to walk and bicycle near the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center.
Board of Public Works members Wednesday unanimously approved plans for a trail and sidewalks throughout the area, filling in gaps and replacing others.
Plans call for a new 8-foot-wide concrete trail on the east side of Randallia Drive from the 1900 block south to Lake Avenue. The west side of Randallia will have old sidewalks replaced between Forest Avenue and Lake.
On Lake Avenue, the north side of the street will get a sidewalk between Randallia and Pemberton Drive, which has never had one despite being a residential area across the street from a school.
There will also be new sidewalk to fill in a gap on the south side of Lake Avenue, from Kernway Court to the existing sidewalk 300 feet east. Kernway Court is a block east of Lakeside Middle School.
Another gap will be filled on Beacon Street, from Forest Avenue to the existing sidewalk about 700 feet south. All of the gaps that will be filled have paths worn in the grass by pedestrians.
Mario Trevino, with city transportation engineering, said the project will go to bid on Friday, with bids opened April 10.
The contract will then have to be approved by the board of works and, depending on the price, possibly by the City Council.
