Troubling times for Komets

Troubling times for Komets

I have been attending Komets hockey games for over 50 years, and I can honestly say that this year’s team is the most non-entertaining version that I can remember.

They do not clear the puck out of their zone or clear bodies or the puck from in front of their net, they do not hit, they do not fight, they do not score and they do not win at home, but the most annoying fact is that in half the games I have seen, they do not even hustle or act like they care.

I am concerned that the ECHL experience is one that Komets fans are going to tire of quickly. There have been around 50 players on this year’s roster compared to 29 last year. You never know who you will see on the ice from game to game. How can you get any lines working well when the combinations are changed almost nightly?

The defense is, for the most part, young and not that big. Also annoying is when I go to games and see maybe 2,500 fans in the crowd only to see attendance of over 5,000 reported in the box score. No wonder they lead the league in attendance when ghosts count. I know that there are always season ticket-holder no-shows, but come on, 2,500 for every game?

I believe the CHL was more fitting for this market place. Let’s face it, the old Toledo and Kalamazoo rivalries are nothing like today’s games. A brand new approach is going to be necessary in order to keep fans coming back in the future I fear. Remember, we are getting players from the worst team in the AHL. If that continues, we will miss the playoffs on a regular basis.
