A car chase near downtown Fort Wayne on Tuesday ended with police officers rescuing an apparently suicidal man who threatened to jump off an overpass.
According to a police reports, the chase began about 3:30 p.m. and involved a van driven by a man whose wife was inside the vehicle.
The man led police through town and hit a mail truck in the process. At one point while the van was stopped, an officer pulled the woman out to safety.
The chase ended in the 1600 block of Fairfield Avenue, where the man got out of the van and threatened to jump off a bridge, according to police reports.
One officer standing below the bridge got the man’s attention while two officers came up from behind and grabbed him, preventing him from jumping.
Several felony charges are pending against the man, who was taken to a hospital. His wife told police he had served in the military and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, reports said.
