Paul Helmke wins Light of Christ Award

FORT WAYNE -- St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in cooperation with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend, announced Friday that the 2013 Father Tom O’Connor Light of Christ Award will be presented to Paul Helmke.

The announcement said the award is being granted “for his leadership in public policy and nonviolence.”

Since serving as mayor from 1988 to 1999, Paul Helmke was a consultant and the head of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence in Washington, D.C.

He is currently Professor of Practice at the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Bloomington.

The award presentation will take place noon Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1101 S. Lafayette St., the announcement said.

Msgr. Robert Schulte, vicar general of the diocese, is scheduled to present the award on behalf of Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades.
