ISTEP+ testing kicks off in state

Irwin Elementary School held an assembly Monday to encourage its third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students to do their best as they begin standardized testing this week.

Hoosier students in grades three through eight will continue or begin ISTEP+ exams today. All students will take the English/language arts and math parts of the test. Fourth- and sixth-grade students will also take science tests, and fifth- and seventh-graders will be tested in social studies.

The long-form answer assessments will be given through the middle of next week. The multiple choice portion of the test will be administered at the end of April.

The results of the ISTEP+ tests are used to grade schools and districts through the state’s accountability system.

Fort Wayne Community Schools recommends that students get plenty of rest this week and eat a healthy breakfast. Students should also be reminded not to stress about the test, but encouraged to do their best.

To get students at Irwin excited, fellow classmates not taking the test cheered them on during an assembly Monday to energize them for the week ahead. Teachers also performed a dance, in flash-mob style, for students.
