President Obama’s pick to lead the EPA may have a few surprising supporters.
Considering the climate in Washington, few would be shocked by strong opposition to anyone Obama nominates to replace outgoing Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa Jackson. But Gina McCarthy, the woman the president has tapped to take over the agency, could have some unexpected boosters.
McCarthy currently leads the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. And as expected, the usual suspects are decrying her nomination.
But McCarthy has also served two Republican governors, including Mitt Romney. She is credited with slashing carbon and mercury pollution in Massachusetts.
Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, who initially supported holding her appointment to oversee the EPA air office in 2009, ended up voicing strong support for her.
