ITT Exelis today announced it has signed an $11.6 million commercial contract to provide communications equipment to an international customer. The work, for an undisclosed buyer, will take place in Fort Wayne.

The order is for SpearNet UHF radios that can be mounted in vehicles, radios that can be worn by soldiers, accessories and spare parts. The portable equipment provides large amounts of voice, data and video communications over a specialized network.

ITT Exelis recently has improved the system’s reliability and its ability to transmit large amounts of data by greatly increasing its data transfer rate.

The McLean, Va.-based manufacturer is a diversified global aerospace, defense and information technology company. As of January, ITT Exelis employed about 1,015 locally in its tactical communications operation and about 440 in its Fort Wayne space-related operation.
