For the police officer, the man’s body language was the giveaway. His combative stance and his abrupt hand movement hinted at the possibility of danger.A man killed early Sunday when his sport utility vehicle rear-ended a bus on Interstate 69 south of Goshen Road has been identified.
The Allen County Coroner’s Office said Christopher Grady Frey, 33, of Fort Wayne, was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the crash.
The silver Chevrolet SUV was traveling north on I-69 when it hit the back of a black bus headed the same direction, Fort Wayne police said for an earlier story.
The SUV hit the center wall and the bus left the scene without stopping, police said.
The driver of a northbound pickup truck tried to avoid the wreck but lost control and spun around, hitting the back of the SUV, police said.
The crash was reported just after 3:30 a.m. No other injuries were reported.
Police initially thought the SUV had struck a semi but later learned the bus had been hit. Officers eventually found the bus in the 9800 block of Coldwater Road, near East Till Road, and investigators questioned the driver. As of Monday morning, there was no word on whether the driver would face charges.
Police described the bus as a “party bus,” one that might ferry people from bar to bar. It was not known whether any passengers were on board at the time of the crash.
The northbound lanes of I-69 were closed between Illinois and Goshen roads until 8:15 a.m. while authorities investigated the collision.
The identity of the bus driver was not released.
