DeKalb prisoner found in city

Riedel

A woman who escaped from DeKalb County sheriff's deputies Wednesday was found nearly five hours later on Fort Wayne's north side, police said.

Shelby C. Riedel, 21, escaped from officers about 2:30 p.m. while being escorted back to the DeKalb County Jail, the sheriff's department said.

Riedel was being held at the DeKalb County Jail on two felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, according to court documents.

On Wednesday afternoon, Riedel was walking with several other inmates when she slipped from her handcuffs and ran around the corner of the jail, the sheriff's department said.

Departmental procedures for transporting inmates back and forth from court were not followed, the sheriff's department said.

Riedel fled west on 9th Street toward Main Street in Auburn and was picked up and taken to a motel in Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne police responded to the motel, but Riedel could not be found, according to the sheriff's department.

Police began to track a cellphone that Riedel was believed to be using and later discovered in a vehicle on Sherman Boulevard. She was found near the Foellinger Theater and was taken into custody about 7:35 p.m., according to John Chambers, a Fort Wayne police spokesman.

The DeKalb County Sheriff's Department said it will continue to investigate the situation, including why the departmental procedures were not followed.
