SUV chase ends with icy plunge into pond

A high-speed chase over the weekend ended when the fleeing driver careened into an icy retention pond, according to a city police report.

About 12:30 a.m. Sunday, an officer tried to pull over a sport utility vehicle at Dawn and Delaware avenues in northeast Fort Wayne.

The driver, later identified as 32-year-old Jason Harrison, fled from police, reaching speeds of 80 mph, the report stated.

Harrison drove onto a cornfield near Lakeside Golf Course and then into a retention pond covered with thin ice. He got out of the SUV, waded through the water and fled on foot, but was caught soon afterward.

The vehicle came to a stop about 10 to 15 feet from the edge of the pond in waist-deep water, the report said.

A woman in the SUV climbed onto the roof, and firefighters brought her to shore, the report said.

Harrison was booked into the Allen County Jail on two counts of a operating a vehicle while intoxicated and two counts of resisting law enforcement. He posted a $5,000 bond to be released later Sunday.
