2 from city honored for greenway work

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and Roger Goodland, a longtime volunteer and Greenways Ranger, were recognized recently by the Greenways Foundation of Indiana. Henry was named outstanding public official, and Goodland was named outstanding trail advocate.

The two were among six entities and individuals recognized by the foundation, a charitable trust that promotes the growth and use of greenways and trails in Indiana.

Housing Authority celebrates 75 years

The Fort Wayne Housing Authority is celebrating 75 years of providing affordable housing for families.

On Feb. 8, 1938, the Fort Wayne Common Council passed a resolution creating the housing authority. FWHA, governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners, administers federal housing programs.

In 1938, WPA workers built the first FWHA prefabricated three-room house, which rented for $2.50 a week. The latest complex, with of 24 units of senior housing, is Whispering Oaks.

The FWHA provides assistance to more than 3,800 families through the Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly known as Section 8), and low-income public housing.

FWHA also receives funding to administer three counseling programs: Housing Counseling, Resident Opportunities Self Sufficiency, and the Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
