Mentone man bolts in cuffs, recaptured

Mahaska

A Mentone man who had been handcuffed slipped away from officers but was caught after a short foot chase over the weekend, according to the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers went to the Palestine Lake area Saturday night to arrest Matthew D. Mahaska, 20, on two felony warrants. They found him walking along County Road 600 West near Blue Jay Drive about 7 p.m.

After handcuffing Mahaska, officers found several stolen items on him, and then suddenly, he turned and ran, the sheriff’s department said. Officers chased him through several yards before catching him.

In addition to Mahaska’s felony warrants on charges of theft and failure to appear, he now faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was being held at the Kosciusko County Jail in lieu of $17,500 bail.

As a result of information investigators gathered Saturday night, Mahaska may also face charges in connection with a recent burglary in the Burket area, the sheriff’s department said.
