Crash closes U.S. 20 for half hour; 1 hurt

A suspected drunken driver was involved in a crash Saturday evening in Steuben County that left another motorist with minor injuries, according to the sheriff’s department.

Cody Smith, 22, of Angola was driving a 1991 Jeep pickup truck east on U.S. 20, west of County Road 600 West. He crossed the centerline and hit a westbound 2012 Chrysler driven by Linda Wegener, 57, of Shipshewana, the sheriff’s department said.

The crash was reported at 6:30 p.m., and U.S. 20 was closed for about 30 minutes.

With minor injuries, Linda Wegener was taken to Cameron Memorial Community Hospital in Angola. Her passenger, Jeffery Wegener, 52, of Shipshewana, and Smith were not hurt, the sheriff’s department said.

Smith was arrested and booked into the Steuben County Jail on two misdemeanor counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He posted a $250 bond to be released Sunday.
