Neglect in abuse case sends mother to prison

A 21-year-old woman who admitted to neglecting her son while he was supposedly abused by her boyfriend was ordered to serve five years in prison Friday.

Holly Brooks was sentenced in Allen Superior Court to 10 years in prison on one count of neglect of a dependent, but the judge suspended half of that sentence.

Both Brooks and her boyfriend, 40-year-old Amilcar Estrada, were arrested last year after doctors found numerous injuries on the body of Brooks’ son.

These injuries included bruises, contact burns and even brain hemorrhages.

Estrada is scheduled to stand trial in March.

Earlier this year, Brooks pleaded guilty to one count of neglect of a dependent. She apparently hid herself away in her bedroom while her son was abused, according to testimony given Friday.

When she is free, she’ll only ever be able to have supervised visits with her son, who is currently in foster care and is in the process of being placed into the custody of another family member.
