Ohio woman, 48, killed in rural DeKalb pileup

An Ohio woman was killed and a Hamilton man was injured in three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning northeast of Waterloo on Indiana 427.

DeKalb County sheriff’s officers responded to a crash at 7:42 a.m. on Indiana 427, east of County Road 39.

Saralee A. Handy, driving a 2005 Ford Focus, was traveling northeast on Indiana 427 when her vehicle veered sharply to the left and traveled across the centerline and into the southwest lane of traffic, the sheriff’s department said.

Thomas E. Suntken, traveling southwest, saw Handy’s car entering his lane and tried to avoid the collision by steering toward the ditch. The Focus collided with his 1997 Ford Ranger, which came to a rest on the west side of the highway.

Handy’s car spun counterclockwise and came to rest in the southbound lane, facing west, police said.

Then a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Glen A. Crawford rear-ended Handy’s car, police said, and the tow bar that was mounted upright on his vehicle smashed Handy’s bumper.

Handy, 48, of Edon, Ohio, died of internal injuries. Suntken, 60, of Hamilton, had a compound fracture to his right ankle. Crawford, 44, of Angola, had no reported injuries.
