Officer in fair condition after crash on Hadley Road

A Fort Wayne police officer is in fair condition after a crash Thursday night on city's west side.

According to police, the officer was dispatched at 9:16 p.m. to an address on Hadley road in reference to a burglary when a vehicle turning onto Hadley failed to stop, causing the officer to drive off the road to avoid crashing into the car.

The officer was driving south on Hadley Road from Illinois Road when the accident occurred, said Jason Anthony, a Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman.

The other vehicle was turning onto Hadley Road to head north at the time of the crash, Anthony said.

The officer was able to miss the vehicle, but left the road and struck several trees before coming to a stop in an "odd position" in the 2200 block of South Hadley Road, Anthony said.

Several drivers in the area spotted the police car's lights from the roadway and called 911, Anthony said.

The officer was taken to a local hospital in serious condition, but he was later upgraded to fair condition.

No information was available about the vehicle that pulled out in front of the officer.
