Drug-sniffing K9 escapes kennel in rural Whitley area

A Columbia City police dog named Stryker went missing Tuesday afternoon after he somehow escaped from his kennel in the Collins area, police said.

Anyone who sees Stryker, a brindle-colored Dutch shepherd, is asked to call 911.

“We want people to know that Stryker is a friendly dog and that Stryker likes people,” Police Chief Tim Longenbaugh said. “The only time he’s aggressive is when he’s given the command to do so by his handler.”

Stryker, a 6-year-old used for detecting drugs and tracking, got loose about 3 p.m. from his kennel at a K9 officer’s home near Collins, a town northeast of Columbia City, Longenbaugh said.

The chief said the dog was last seen near Indiana 205 and County Road 200 North. Numerous police officers and firefighters were looking for the animal Tuesday evening, he said.
