Carroll teacher honored

Northwest Allen County School officials Monday honored a Carroll High School teacher for his dedication to the classroom and creative teaching strategies.

Andy Deatrick, a high school science teacher, was named the 2012 Teacher of the Year for Northwest Allen County Schools.

All Hoosier school corporations can nominate one teacher each year to represent the district at the state level of the Teacher of the Year program, according to the Indiana Department of Education.

Deatrick was recognized for his creative teaching skills including his “flip the classroom” program in which students listen to lectures online as homework and use class time for individualized projects and application-based learning.

Deatrick joined Carroll High School in 2008.
