Lugar, IU teaming up

Former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar apparently will have a role with a third university.

Indiana University said Tuesday that it will make a “major announcement” at 1:30.p.m. Thursday involving Lugar, IU President Michael McRobbie and former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton, director of IU’s Center on Congress.

The announcement will take place at IU’s Lilly Library. The library’s collections include papers and documents donated by Hamilton, former Sen. Birch Bayh and other Hoosier political figures.

Lugar, 80, already has announced plans to start a Washington, D.C., internship academy for the University of Indianapolis, lecture at that school and become a visiting distinguished professor at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute.

The ex-mayor of Indianapolis left the Senate this month after 36.years in the chamber, where he was a leader on foreign policy, agriculture and energy issues. The non-partisan center produces educational materials, provides seminars for teachers and journalists, conducts surveys and issues commentaries, all related to the federal legislative branch.
