As John Weicker finishes his final two months of school, he’s counting down the days with a small ticker in his office.On Thursday, the counter read 44 days, plus a few hours, minutes and seconds.City officials and a Cleveland company hope they are closer to turning around a troubled southeast side apartment complex.
The Fort Wayne Plan Commission on Monday approved a primary plan for the Villages of Hanna Townhouses, a 32-unit development that would take root at Eden Green apartments if Millennia Housing Development secures state tax credits for the low-income housing project.
The company also needs City Council to approve a rezoning request.
The 192-unit Eden Green complex has had violence and drug problems, but Millennia Housing plans to invest at least $7 million in renovations, including increasing security with better lighting and cameras. Homeowners in the area have voiced skepticism, but city officials have expressed confidence in Millennia.
The company acquires, preserves and rehabilitates multi-family rental properties and has an affiliation with 112 sites in seven states.
Millennia representative and architect Eric Maring has said the company – which acquired Eden Green in the fall of 2011 – won’t be an absentee property owner and will be “hands-on.”
The Eden Green site includes property at the corner of Hurd and Reed streets, the corner of East Creighton Avenue and Reed Street, and the corner of Greene Street and Bowser Avenue.
