Man attempts to escape officers

A rural Fremont man tried to disarm a Steuben County sheriff’s officer during a scuffle with police Sunday morning, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.

Shortly after 3 a.m., Fremont police found a stolen vehicle and the alleged thief, 27-year-old Sean Harman, in downtown Fremont. While being arrested, Harman slipped one of his hands out of handcuffs and tried to get away, the release said.

Fremont police and sheriff’s deputies struggled with Harman, and he tried unsuccessfully to grab a deputy’s gun, the release said.

Harman was handcuffed again and taken into custody. He faces felony charges of auto theft, attempted escape and attempted disarming of a law enforcement officer, as well as misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement and false reporting.

He was held at the Steuben County Jail in lieu of $78,505 bail. He also has an arrest warrant in Warrick County.
