Woman accused of neglect in skull fracture to child, 2

A Winona Lake woman was arrested Thursday on charges that she badly injured her fiancé’s 2-year-old daughter.

Karen Marie Bartley, 35, was charged with neglect of a dependent, endangering life and causing serious bodily injury.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department said the child’s father and Bartley took the girl to Kosciusko Community Hospital on Dec. 18 because she had been vomiting. The girl was transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne where doctors discovered she had a skull fracture, police said.

Bartley initially told police the girl had thrown a temper tantrum and repeatedly hit the back of her head on the floor, but she later admitted that she had become “overly aggressive” while playing with the girl.

Bartley, of Robson Road, was being held at the Kosciusko County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
