About 3 p.m. Thursday the Rev. Bill McGill looked out of his window and pondered that it was the 37th day of his 40-day fast to draw attention to violence in the community, and there had been no civilian-on-civilian homicides in Fort Wayne.Twenty-six Huntington residents have found new homes after a fire destroyed the 12-unit apartment building where they were living.
Huntington Fire Department crews received a call about a fire-alarm fire at Carriage Place Apartments, 600 Bartlett St., about 8:45 a.m. Monday, officials said. As crews arrived a few minutes later, heavy smoke was billowing from the west attic of Building 13.
It took about 45 firefighters nearly six hours to extinguish the fire. No one was injured.
Fire Chief Tim Albertson said the fire began in a wall between the kitchen areas of two apartments.
“We don’t have an exact cause at this point, but we know it started between those two walls,” Albertson said.
Albertson said it was too soon to say whether the building was a complete loss, but the west end of the building was destroyed. “That will be up to the insurance company; … it’s really what to do with the east side,” he said.
By Wednesday afternoon, all 11 families had been relocated, Carriage Place leasing consultant Cassie Wieckert said..
Wieckert said the apartment complex was able to find apartments for eight of the families in other buildings at its Bartlett Street location.
Two other families have moved in with family or are relocating to another apartment complex, she said. The 11th family was in the process of moving into a house and decided to push forward with moving plans, Wieckert said.
