Credit union workers foil would-be robbery

For the fifth time in three years, a credit union on Inwood Drive was the target Wednesday of a robbery, but this time, employees were ready.

Two men trying to rob Freedom Financial Federal Credit Union, 1802 Inwood Drive, near Coliseum and East State boulevards and Lake Avenue, were thwarted when credit union employees locked them out, Fort Wayne police said.

Police responded to the credit union about 10:45 a.m.

Employees said two men, one armed with a long gun, were spotted near the credit union. The employees locked the lobby doors, preventing them from entering and the men fled east on foot to a nearby residential area.

Wednesday afternoon, the lobby doors remained locked, but the credit union continued to serve customers at the drive-thru window.

Those with information about the attempted robbery are asked to call Fort Wayne police at 427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 436-7867.

The same Freedom Financial branch was robbed twice in 2011 and 2012.
