Two men trying to rob an Inwood Drive credit union were thwarted Wednesday when credit-union employees locked them out, Fort Wayne police said.

The robbers fled on foot, police said in a statement. No customers were inside the credit union at the time, and no one was injured.

Police said they responded to Freedom Financial Federal Credit Union, 1802 Inwood Drive, about 10:45 a.m. on a report of a robbery.

Employees told police they saw two men, one armed with a long gun, near the bank, so they locked the lobby doors, denying the men access to the credit union.

The robbers fled into a nearby residential area, and possibly to a waiting vehicle, police said.

It was the fifth time since 2011 the credit union had been targeted by robbers.

The attempted robbery is being investigated by the Northeast Indiana Bank Robbery Task Force, which consists of Fort Wayne police, the Allen County sheriff's department, Indiana State Police and the FBI.
