Silver Lake, Lagro to open village post offices

Silver Lake and Lagro on Friday will open new village post offices -- in their town halls.

Silver Lake will open its location at Silver Lake Town Hall, 604 N. Jefferson St., at 10 a.m., the postal service said in a statement. Lagro will open its location at Lagro Town Hall, 230 Buchanan St., at noon. An one-hour open house will follow the opening at each location.

Both communities had hours at their traditional post offices cut to four hours a day in the mornings, the statement said. By using the town halls, it said, residents of both can buy stamps and drop off mail during the afternoons.

Silver Lake Town Hall is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. Lagro Town Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Last year, the postal service introduced village post offices as alternatives for postal retailing, especially in rural communities. The locations in Silver Lake and Lagro are the 23rd and 24th in Indiana -- and the first two located in town halls.
