Dog rescuer falls into lake, rescued

A man was rescued from the frigid waters of a lake Tuesday afternoon after he fell through the ice while trying to save a dog, the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.

About 3:15 p.m., the fire department’s dive team was dispatched to 1823 Shamrock Road on Stone Lake in south Fort Wayne, near Winchester Road and Airport Expressway.

A diver wearing an ice-rescue suit crawled to the man who was clinging to the ice about 70 feet from shore. The diver pulled the man from the water, and then other crew members brought the diver and the man to shore just before 3:30 p.m., the department said.

The man told authorities he was trying to rescue a dog that fell through the ice before he did.

The man was treated at the scene. He and the dog were OK, the department said.
