Leesburg slaying only regional killing outside Allen

Kosciusko County had the only homicide in the region outside Allen County in 2012.

On Feb. 27, a Milford woman died hours after she was shot behind the counter of a Leesburg convenience store, where she was trying to escape from her ex-husband.

While Luselva Saavedra, 35, lay suffering from the gunshot wound, Ruben Saavedra fled the scene and killed himself a short time later, police said.

Luselva Saavedra ran from a vehicle and into Katie’s Kwik Mart at 100 N. Main St. in Leesburg. She was pleading for the store clerk to help her get away from her ex-husband, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department said.

Ruben Saavedra, 35, ran into the store brandishing a revolver and fired one round over the counter, striking his ex-wife in the shoulder.

She was flown by helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition before later dying from the gunshot wound.

After the shooting, witnesses told police Ruben Saavedra left the gas station in a red pickup truck.

Warsaw police found the truck a short time later in the north end of an empty parking lot on the Ivy Tech campus at U.S. 30 and Silveus Crossing.

As officers approached the vehicle, they saw that the 35-year-old man was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
