Federal jury indicts 2 in gun robbery

Two men arrested in connection with the November armed robbery of a New Haven gun shop have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Fort Wayne.

Brenton Ennis, 18, and Craig Whigum, 19, are each charged in a two-count indictment with armed robbery of firearms and money and carrying a firearm in relation to a robbery affecting interstate commerce.

With Orlando Paschall, 21, and an unnamed 15-year-old boy waiting outside in a blue Impala, Ennis and Whigum went into Shooters at 660 Lincoln Highway W. in New Haven, according to court documents.

Either Ennis or Whigum asked to see a firearm and when the store owner went to get it, the robber pulled his own gun and pointed it at the owner, court records allege. A customer told police the other robber pointed a gun at him and demanded money and his car keys.

The store owner’s own gun was taken from him, as well as his wallet, which contained $1,200 in store money he was going to deposit at a bank. One of the robbers threatened to kill him and threw him to the floor, according to court documents.

Ennis and Whigum were charged in a federal criminal complaint soon after their arrest in November. State prosecutors inititally charged Paschall with robbery, but the charge was dismissed.
