Beetle harmful to walnut trees found in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — State officials say a beetle that threatens walnut trees has been found in Ohio.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that walnut tree products have been quarantined in southwest Ohio after the discovery of Walnut Twig Beetles.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the small insect carries an incurable fungus that kills walnut trees.

The department said Monday that eight beetles were found in traps set at a wood processing business in Butler County.

So far, officials haven't found any trees infested with the fungus that causes Thousand Cankers Disease. That's when the beetles bore into the branches and trunk of the trees, causing infections and killing them.
