About 3 p.m. Thursday the Rev. Bill McGill looked out of his window and pondered that it was the 37th day of his 40-day fast to draw attention to violence in the community, and there had been no civilian-on-civilian homicides in Fort Wayne.FORT WAYNE – The Mustard Seed Furniture Bank expects to get at least 20 referrals from the American Red Cross to aid victims of Sunday’s apartment fire.
That number is “staggering” for the agency, Executive Director Suzie Jordan said in a written statement Monday, asking for the community’s support.
Fort Wayne has had four apartment complex fires in less than three week, and the furniture bank helps uninsured fire victims get back on their feet.
She said Mustard Seed needs the following items:
- Pots and pans.
- Toasters.
- Crock pots.
- Bake ware.
- Silverware.
- Cooking utensils.
- Kitchen towels and dish cloths.
- Blankets – twin, full, queen and king.
Mustard Seed asks that donated items be clean and in working order, and free of holes, animal hair and cigarette burns. Any cash or gift card donations will be used to buy needed items.
All donations are tax-deductible and receipts are provided for items donated during regular business hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The agency asks that no items be left outside its doors.
The Mustard Seed is at 3636 Illinois Road.
The agency also assists those who are leaving homeless shelters, domestic violence survivors, veterans, those with physical and mental disabilities, the elderly, those aging out of the foster care system, those leaving a substance abuse recovery program, and those leaving incarceration and who are referred through their parole officer.
