Two-hour standoff ends with kids unawakened

An armed Fort Wayne man was arrested early Saturday after a two-hour standoff in West Central while two children in the home slept.

The man, Ryan Baughman, 23, of the 800 block of West Jefferson Street was taken into custody about 6:20 a.m., according to the Fort Wayne Police Department. The police had responded to a domestic violence call from a woman who said he was threatening her with an semi-automatic handgun.

The woman called the police at 3:22 a.m. Saturday and said she and Baughman had been in a heated argument. According to the police, she said Baughman was under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs and had threatened her. The woman, who had minor injuries, fled from the apartment and called police, leaving the two children -- a one-year-old boy and four-year-old girl -- inside.

Officers arrived at 3:25 a.m. but were unable to contact Baughman. The Emergency Services Team and the Crisis Response Team were also called.

After staging police around the apartment, several officers from the Emergency Services Team forced entry into the home shortly after 6 a.m., the report said. Baughman was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and two loaded magazines of ammunition.

The children were found sleeping in another room, uninjured, and were returned to their mother.

Baughman was arrested on a felony charge of domestic battery with children present and a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery.

Traffic on West Jefferson Street near Van Buren Street was diverted to Main Street for more than three hours.
