Annual run raises more than $16,000

The sixth annual Run for Riley on Sunday raised $16,345 to benefit Riley Hospital for Children. More than 500 runners and walkers participated in the event hosted by WAJI-FM, Majic 95.1.

Aboite Podiatry and Anytime Fitness sponsored the event, allowing the entire $25 race registration fee to be given to the hospital. Including this year’s total, the Run for Riley event has raised about $73,000.

Teacher of the Year to take sabbatical

Indiana’s 2012 Teacher of the Year will take a yearlong sabbatical from teaching to travel the state, speaking to corporations and universities to share information on state education initiatives.

Melanie Park, a teacher at Riverview Middle School in the Huntington Community Schools district, has joined the state Department of Education as a Teacher in Residence for the upcoming school year, according to a news release.

She said her new mission is to celebrate the teaching profession and encourage education professionals to embrace change.

Park, a 19-year veteran teacher, has started a blog about her experience as a Teacher in Residence.
