SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Arnold Schwarzenegger says his lifelong penchant for secrecy and ability to put his emotions on deep freeze led him to keep many secrets from his wife Maria Shriver, eventually causing the dissolution of their marriage when he was forced to admit he fathered a child with the family’s housekeeper years earlier.
Throughout their strained 25-year marriage, Schwarzenegger says he did not want to tell Shriver about crucial life decisions such as major heart surgery and running for California governor because he feared she would overreact and tell her well-connected family and friends.
In his new autobiography, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story, and in an interview that aired Sunday on 60 Minutes, the former California governor acknowledged that his inability to be honest with people has hurt those closest to him.
That’s the way I handle things. And it always has worked. But, I mean it does not – it’s not the best thing for people around me because I sometimes – some information I just keep to myself, Schwarzenegger told reporter Lesley Stahl on 60 Minutes.
Schwarzenegger’s biggest secret, the child he had with the family’s housekeeper, became tabloid news last year after he left office. Shriver confronted him during a January 2011 counseling session and he finally acknowledged the boy, Joseph, was his.
There were other deceptions, too, including a hot affair with actress Brigitte Nielsen while filming the 1985 film Red Sonja, when he and Shriver were living together. He admits to other affairs but told Stahl they are something that’s obviously between Maria and me.
Charges voided vs. man Lohan accused of assault
A 25-year-old man initially arrested Sunday on an assault charge after actress Lindsay Lohan claimed he grabbed her in a New York hotel room in an argument over cellphone images was freed hours later and his arrest voided when the charge could not be substantiated, law enforcement officials said.
Instead, Christian LaBella of Valley Village, Calif., and Lohan were filing harassment complaints with police against each other after they were interviewed by police about their run-in, law enforcement officials said.
Afterward, Lohan publicist Steve Honig expressed outrage that police did not charge LaBella.
We think it’s both distressing and outrageous, he said in a telephone interview. Lindsey was assaulted and there needs to be a consequence for that.
LaBella could not be reached for comment. The former congressional aide was taken into custody about 6 a.m. after a 911 call came from the swank W Hotel in Manhattan’s Union Square where Lohan apparently pulled the fire alarm, the two officials said.
The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Lohan and LaBella met hours earlier at a night club, although it was unclear whether they previously knew each other, the officials said. They went back to her room, when she noticed the cellphone photos of her on his phone and grabbed the device, the officials said.
She claimed LaBella grabbed her and threw her, but later he said she had forcefully taken his phone, the officials said. Lohan was injured but not hospitalized, Honig said in a statement.
