CHEERS to Danny Rifkin for use of Hangar 39 and to John Dilley with JD Aviation for making possible the successful venue for the Sept. 6 Flying High with SCAN fundraiser at Fort Wayne International Airport. The event raised nearly $90,000 in support of programs and services to prevent child abuse and neglect in 19 counties. Thanks to these individuals for loaning vehicles explored by the more than 300 people who attended: Pete Keelan for the Indy 500 Roadster and other show cars; Norfolk and Southern Railroad for the engine and caboose; Rick Whipp for the 12-seater plane; the Indiana Air Force Reserve for the fighter jet; and to the many other in-kind donors, sponsors and guests.

Ursula had the grill put in her van and followed me to my home. This unsolicited, unrewarded kindness was the choice of a very giving human.

CHEERS to the TinCaps for a great season and playoff run. Their never-say-die attitude was much enjoyed and appreciated. But JEERS to manager Jose Valentin and hitting coach Jacque Jones for hiding in the runway to the clubhouse during the national anthem during what turned out to be the season’s final game. Surely they know better.

CHEERS to the man who paid for my lunch at the Coldwater Road Buffalo Wings & Ribs on Sept. 11. As we waited in line to pay, I was behind him. When the cashier asked him whether he was ready to pay he said yes and then he said that he was going to pay for mine too. I told him that wasn’t necessary. He took my ticket, pointed to my badge on my belt and said, “It’s 9/11.” It caught me totally off guard and all I could think to do was thank him and shake his hand.
