Boy injured, 2 adults jailed on neglect charge

A man and woman were arrested Saturday afternoon after a report that a 1-year-old boy in their care had been abused at a Hudson home, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department said.

Friday afternoon, the Hudson town marshal sought the sheriff’s department’s help with the case, and sheriff’s detectives identified Austin M. Phibbs, 19, and Samantha N. Rhodes, 20, as suspects.

Both were preliminarily charged with felony neglect of a dependent. Phibbs also faces a felony count of battery to a child less than 14 years old.

The boy was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne with possible internal injuries. His condition Saturday night was not available.

The boy’s name and his relation to Phibbs and Rhodes were not released.

Phibbs and Rhodes, both of Hudson, were being held without bond at the Steuben County Jail in Angola until their initial court hearings.
