Pursuit locks down schools in DeKalb

A Fort Wayne man is accused of burglarizing a DeKalb County home and then trying to flee police through some woods, where he had stashed guns in deer hunting tree stands.

Area schools were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure at the time, police said.

Matthew S. Poeppel, 43, of the 6900 block of Harlequin Court, was caught about 1 p.m. Tuesday after DeKalb County sheriff’s officers responded to a reported burglary at a home in the 5200 block of County Road 31.

Items missing from inside the home were found outside the home nearby, and soon thereafter officers heard a shot ring out in the woods.

Poeppel was found in a deer hunting stand there. He jumped down from the stand and ran from officers, according to police. He was caught when he ran into a large grove of weeds.

Officers found a shotgun in the tree stand he was in initially and then two or three other guns at other tree stands, police said. Poeppel is charged with burglary, theft and resisting law enforcement.
