Burglar targeted Amish homes while families at church

Richards

A northern Indiana woman has been arrested, accused of burglarizing the homes of Amish families living in LaGrange County while members were attending church.

The Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division arrested Marylou Ann Richards, 34, of Elkhart County, on Friday morning at the Elkhart County Jail where she was being held on other charges, the division said in a written statement issued Friday.

It said she targeted rural Amish residences in late July and into early August, breaking in and taking primarily cash, checks and credit cards from at least two homes.

Richards was served with an arrest warrant for two counts of burglary.

The state police said the break in the case came when a homeowner confronted Richards, who had been asking for directions, and got her license plate information.

She was stopped by the Middlebury Police Department on Aug. 15 for a traffic violation and was arrested on outstanding warrants out of Goshen and Elkhart City on unrelated charges, the state police statement said.

Agencies assisting included the LaGrange County and Elkhart County sheriff’s departments, and the Middlebury, Millersburg and Shipshewana police departments.
