Report: Irish lose Wood for season

Notre Dame's secondary was dealt a big blow Monday, according to reports.

Cornerback Lo Wood suffered an Achilles injury that will sideline the junior for the season, according to the Irish Illustrated website.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Wood will undergo surgery this week, according to the website. Wood can take a medical redshirt this season and return with two years of eligibility remaining.

Wood was expected to take over one of the starting cornerback positions as the Irish replace last year's starters Gary Gray and Robert Blanton.

Wood played in 21 games in his first two seasons at Notre Dame. He has eight tackles and one interception.

Wood had stood out during training camp as he worked opposite Bennett Jackson with the first-team defense since practices started Aug. 4.

"If you ask me after the first five days (of camp) the guy that's really impressed the staff the most it's been Lo Wood," coach Brian Kelly said Aug. 8.

Notre Dame could turn to safety Jamoris Slaughter, who occasionally worked at cornerback during the spring, to replace Wood. That would likely move Matthias Farley into a starting spot along side Zeke Motta.

The Irish's other cornerbacks options are sophomores Josh Atkinson, Jalen Brown and Cam McDaniel and freshmen KeiVarae Russell and Elijah Shumate.

McDaniel and Russell are both converted running backs. Atkinson played sparingly last year, and Brown did not play last season.

Coach Brian Kelly is scheduled to hold a news conference at noon today, and he will likely address Wood's injury and the cornerback situation.
