Victim of Fort Wayne fatal fire is ID'd

FORT WAYNE – An early Monday fire at a home southwest of downtown near Broadway killed an 84-year-old Fort Wayne man.

The Allen County Coroner's Office said Tuesday that John L. Shirey was identified using fingerprints. His death has been ruled an accident.

Fort Wayne firefighters responded to the fire at 744 DeWald St. at 5:32 a.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the structure, a report said.

The first crews that arrived entered the home and found the man on the first floor, the statement said. Shirey was pulled from the home and later pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no one else inside the home at the time of the fire, which is believed to have started in the kitchen area and extended to the second floor of the home, the statement said.

The investigation continues by the Fort Wayne Fire Department and the coroner's office.
