Car hits complex; $20,000 in damage

A driver ran into an apartment building and caused about $20,000 in damage before leaving the scene Tuesday night, according to Fort Wayne police reports.

Police were sent to the 7400 block of Lakeridge Drive, near Lower Huntington Road and Airport Expressway, about 8:45 p.m. and found heavy damage to an outside wall of the building. They also found a black front bumper that appeared to have once had a Saturn emblem on it, the reports said.

Police determined the car had been traveling south in a parking lot before striking the building, the reports stated.

The crash affected four units, two of which were vacant. The two occupied units were evacuated, and a neighborhood code officer condemned the structure. The building’s maintenance supervisor estimated the damage at $20,000, the reports said.

A woman told police she was in the building when she heard the crash and saw a black car back out of the wreckage and go north on Lakeridge Drive.

About an hour later, a police officer found a black 2002 Saturn with no front bumper and both air bags deployed in the 7500 block of Bluffton Road, about a mile and a half from the crash scene. Concrete dust and a chunk of concrete or rock were on the hood. Two unopened 24-ounce beer cans and an empty one were on the front seat, the reports stated.
