Indiana runner Bayer earns trip to nationals

Indiana University senior and former Leo standout Andy Bayer ran an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 7:50.23 for the 3,000 meters at the Meyo Invitational on Saturday in South Bend.

The time automatically qualifies Bayer, who finished second Saturday, for the NCAA indoor championships, where he placed third last season in the 3,000-meter run.

The 7:50.23 posted by Bayer is among the top 10 by NCAA Division I athletes this season. It is the second time that Bayer has run under 8 minutes this season, and he remains the only Big Ten athlete to do so, bettering the rest of the conference pack by more than 10 seconds.

Earlier, Bayer ran a 3:58.23 mile, which was an NCAA Division I best at the time.
