Shooting victim dies at hospital

A man who was shot Friday night near East Paulding Road and Lafayette Street later died at a hospital, Fort Wayne police said.

Emergency dispatchers received a call at 10:47 p.m. from a woman who was driving the victim to St. Joseph Hospital, said Officer Scott Tegtmeyer, a police spokesman.

Tegtmeyer said the woman was near Hanna and Oxford streets when she called. “She refused to stop for the paramedics. She wanted to continue on to the hospital,” he said.

The woman told authorities that she had lent her car to someone, and when it was returned, the gunshot victim was inside. She then took him immediately to the hospital, Tegtmeyer said.

Tegtmeyer said police believe the victim, who was not named, was shot near the corner of Paulding and Lafayette when he was in the woman’s vehicle. The gunfire came from another vehicle, he said.
