Unattended candles blamed for blaze; firefighter hurt

A Fort Wayne firefighter was in good condition after being injured Thursday morning at a fire north of downtown, the fire department said.

Firefighters were called to a residential fire at 2011 Andrew St. about 8:40 a.m.

Witnesses outside said someone was inside, so several crews began a primary search of the residence and others worked to knock down the fire. It was quickly determined no one was inside, according to a statement from the fire department.

It said the home had heavy smoke damage and that candles left burning unattended caused the blaze.

The injured firefighter was not identified.
