IHSAA sets girls’ sectional pairings

– Some of the area’s best hopes for a state championship in girls basketball rest with Bishop Luers, Angola, Concordia, Norwell and South Side.

Their quests got a little easier Sunday when the IHSAA announced its sectional pairings through a blind draw, and those teams wound up with first-round byes. Games begin Feb. 6.

“We got the bye and that gives us another day to practice,” said John Renier, coach of defending Class 2A champion Bishop Luers.

The No. 2 Knights (15-4) go to the Adams Central Sectional and face the winner of Eastside (1-16) and Bluffton (6-12).

“We’re probably going to be favored (in our sectional), but I’ve seen some huge upsets in the past and it doesn’t hurt to have a bye,” Renier said. “We just need to take these games like we did all (season). We’re happy with the way it shook out.”

Adams Central (7-11) also got a bye and plays the winner of South Adams (3-15) and Churubusco (6-13).

“Our schedule has certainly prepared us for anything,” Renier said. “We’re looking forward to the tournament. Having the bye and getting that extra day is fine.”

With three ranked teams, the Class 3A Garrett Sectional looks to be the most competitive in the area.

“I think it’s one of the toughest in the state,” said No. 4 Angola coach John Berger, who added that Garrett and Bishop Dwenger “aren’t far behind” No. 7 Concordia and No. 12 Leo.

Angola (19-1) plays the winner of Leo (17-3) and Garrett (12-6). Concordia (13-5) faces the winner of Bishop Dwenger (8-9) and Woodlan (12-6).

“I think it worked out terrifically for us,” Berger said. “We didn’t want to get Concordia in the first game, and they end up with a bye, too, in the bottom bracket. It’s fair and I think it’s perfect. We play the winner of Leo and Garrett. … Yeah, absolutely, (let them beat up each other); Leo is ranked and Garrett is playing better and better.”

In the Class 3A Mississinewa Sectional, top-ranked Norwell (17-3) plays the winner of Eastbrook (5-14) vs. Heritage (12-7). Bellmont (3-16) also got a bye and plays the winner of Whitko (8-11) and Mississinewa (1-17).

The Class 4A Homestead Sectional has No. 4 South Side (18-1) playing the winner of Homestead (16-4) vs. Jay County (11-7). New Haven (5-13) gets the winner of Wayne (7-10) vs. Huntington North (4-14).

In Class A, top-ranked Canterbury (18-2), which won the state championship in 2009 and 2010, faces Elkhart Christian (2-14) in the Lakewood Park Sectional. Lakewood Park Christian (5-11) takes on Bethany Christian (9-9), and Hamilton (8-9) plays Howe (0-2). Blackhawk Christian (6-12) has a bye and will face the winner of the Canterbury game.

After spending two years in Fort Wayne, the state championship games will be played March 3 in Terre Haute.
