State agency sets gasification plant public hearing

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Environmental Management says it will hold an air permit meeting and hearing Wednesday for a $2.65 billion southern Indiana coal gasification plant.

Regulators will meet at 5:30 p.m. CST at South Spencer High School in Rockport to discuss the permit for the Indiana Gasification plant about 30 miles east of Evansville. The public hearing is scheduled to begin an hour later.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in November approved another state agency's 30-year contract to buy synthetic natural gas from the plant. Gov. Mitch Daniels promoted the deal as one that would locking in low rates for Indiana's natural gas users, increasing the use of Indiana coal, and creating about 200 jobs.
