The re-election campaign for Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., announced Monday that he was endorsed over the weekend by Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard.
Lugar was a two-term Indianapolis mayor before winning election to the Senate in 1976. Ballard made the endorsement Saturday at a Republican Party Lincoln Day dinner at which they appeared in Marion County's Wayne Township.
According to Lugar's campaign, 23 mayors in Indiana have endorsed his candidacy.
Lugar is being challenged by second-term state Treasurer Richard Mourdock in the May 8 Republican primary election. Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-2nd, seeks the Democratic nomination.
