Hummingbirds need protein to survive. Sugar water gives them energy to hunt for bugs.
An extra feeder was put out with Nektar-Plus, which offers a complete diet for hummers. On warm days the rufous catches fruit flies from a compost pile.

A juvenile male rufous hummingbird feeds while it snows in northwest Fort Wayne on Thursday morning. It's the 64th rufous to be recorded in the East throughout the years. Rufous hummingbirds breed in the Pacific Northwest and typically winter in Mexico.
