Indiana pilot dies in Afghan helicopter crash

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A defense contractor says a western Indiana pilot who worked for the company has died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

AAR Corp. spokesman Chris Mason said 51-year-old Michael Clawson died Monday along with two other employees of the Wood Dale, Ill.,-based company in the southern Afghanistan crash. He says they were working on an assignment for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Family friend Father John Bamman of St. Joseph’s Parish in Terre Haute told the Tribune-Star (http://bit.ly/zhpwr6) that Clawson leaves behind a wife and five children who are now in daze.

Bamman said Clawson’s most recent trip to Afghanistan was a “big deal for him” but he knew the dangers of his mission.
