Stutzman seeks re-election

Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, has filed to run for a second term in Congress.

Stutzman, a LaGrange County farmer and former state legislator, filed his candidacy this week with the Indiana secretary of state. He is the only announced candidate in the 3rd District, which covers northeast Indiana.

Stutzman is a member of the House Budget, Agriculture and Veterans Affairs committees.

Others who have filed recently to run for Congress in the May 8 primary elections include:

  • 5th District, Republican – David McIntosh of Anderson, who was in the House from 1995 through 2000 and was the GOP nominee for governor in 2000.
  • 5th District, Democrat – State Rep. Scott Reske of Pendleton.
  • 6th District, Republican – Don Bates, a financial adviser who lives in Winchester; Bill Frazier of Muncie, a congressional candidate for the sixth time; former state lawmaker Luke Messer of Shelbyville; and Madison resident Joseph Van Wye Sr.
  • 6th District, Democrat – Bradley Bookout of Muncie, a former Delaware County councilman; and Jim Crone of Hanover, chairman of the Jefferson County Democratic Party.

The 6th District will be an open seat because Rep. Mike Pence seeks the Republican nomination for governor. Rep. Dan Burton, R-5th, is expected to seek re-election.

The 5th and 6th districts currently include portions of northeast Indiana. Because of redistricting that occurs after every census to account for population changes, those areas - Huntington County in the 5th District and Adams, Wells and southern Allen counties in the 6th District - will join the 3rd District for the next 10 years beginning with this year's elections.

Feb. 10 is the filing deadline for candidates.
